A new chapter is being written in the story of Dragon Gate. In mid-July, construction begins on a new climate-neutral heating facility at what may be Sweden’s most unique rest stop, located in Älvkarleby Municipality. The facility marks the first step in developing a future commercial area and will have the capacity to heat 35,000–40,000 square meters, ready for upcoming business establishments.
“The heating plant will act as a driving force for the development of the area, both practically and symbolically. It enables us to heat the hotel as well as new properties to come. There’s strong interest in establishing businesses here, but we are careful to find partners that fit the vision. Our goal is to transform Dragon Gate into an attractive commercial destination,” says Ted Rundquist, representative of Arosslättens Fastigheter 1 AB, the owner of Dragon Gate.
The new facility will feature three ETA VR 500kW woodchip boilers with a total output of 1,500 kW. The solution is designed by Biovärme Sverige, one of the country’s largest bioenergy companies in this power class, with redundancy and high availability as key principles. The three boilers will allow demand-driven operation year-round and ensure continuous heating even during maintenance or system interruptions. Biovärme Sverige has also designed the entire new culvert system, which will distribute heat across the Dragon Gate area.

The contractor for the build is Lindborg, one of Sweden’s leading construction companies specializing in glulam structures.

The heating facility will be housed in a uniquely wing-shaped glulam building and will also include a vehicle hall for a future business establishment.
Construction of the heating plant and vehicle hall begins in mid-July 2025 and is expected to be operational in spring 2026.
